At Cencal Mechanical Heating & Air, Inc. HVAC company in Modesto, CA, we install and service UV lights. Homeowners are acutely aware of the risk of viruses and bacteria in their homes and look for ways to remove them. The best way to reduce that risk is through ultraviolet light. It’s the perfect complement to a whole-house air purification system that removes allergens, gases, chemicals, and more.
"Probably the best customer service company in California. The staff at Cencal have impressed me every time with their professionalism."
- David M.
UV lights deactivate pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, but also other microorganisms, such as mold spores and dust mite eggs. You may wonder why we don’t experience this effect from sunlight, which contains UV radiation.
The reason for this is that UV light has three main components: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C is the germicidal component; no UV-C from the sun makes it through the ozone layer. UV-A and UV-B get through a little, and those are the types of light we associate with skin cancer.
The term for using UV-C for air purification is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). UVGI has been effective in hospitals and on commercial aircraft for many decades. That’s the same technology our HVAC technicians can install in your home.
Our services offered by Cencal Mechanical Heating & Air, Inc.:
A common question we get concerns the difference between standalone UV lamps and those integrated with an air purifier. The biggest difference is airflow. The longer the exposure, the more effective UV-C is. These lamps benefit from the slower airflow in your ducts. Air purifiers have much higher airflow, which means the exposure is shorter. The approach still works but isn’t as effective.
Another frequent question concerns whether ducts are a requirement, and the answer is no. The ductwork is an ideal location in homes with central HVAC systems. Other solutions exist for homes with ductless systems. Those include UV lamps we can install directly in each mini-split unit.
Consider these other benefits of ultraviolet light in the home:
Illness prevention
Enhanced air quality
Less risk of dust mites
Reduce mold and mildew
